Christmas Parade

Saturday, December 28, 2013

I guess this is a follow up to my Paleo post.  This is going to be wordy so here is a picture to start it off.  I am in a bikini because I wanted to be able to see any changes that I was making and clothes can mask a lot.  I needed the motivation and the pictures have been a huge motivation for me!  I can't believe I am putting this up, but if you were at the pool with me this is what you would see so here it is.

I mentioned that my weight plateaued.  I was using Paleo as a guide, but not a rule.   As the summer went on I started to think of what I wanted to do for exercise.  P90x did not seem to make that big of a difference.

I started to look into Crossfit.  It was something I have wanted to do for awhile. The pictures of people that do it are insane.  I knew I needed to join a gym so that I would actually work out and work out hard.

I wanted a gym that was:
1) Close to my house
2) It had to have a class time before work (I always have things come up after work and that meant I did not have to keep the kids in school longer)

So after my internet search I found a Crossfit Box that fit those two criteria.  They offer a free intro class on a Saturday.  Then you have to go through 4 classes to teach you the moves so that you can go to a regular class.  I decided to wait until we returned from our beach vacation to start.  I went to the intro class on Aug 3rd.  It just about killed me.  I could not reach my arm up to get a glass from the cabinet.  Oh and the "work out" portion was only 10 minutes!  But that being said I signed myself up for the training classes.  I went in the morning two days a week in the last few mornings of my Summer vacation.

I have loved it.  I am there at 5:30am four mornings a week.  Then usually once on the weekend.  It is usually the same people so that has been fun.   I am out of my bed after the first alarm and throw on my clothes and am out the door.  Sometimes I look around at everyone working out and I can't believe we are all going full force at such an early hour.  I love it though because it puts me in a great mood for work.

I got really strong really fast.  I learned how to do handstand pushups and climb a 15 ft rope.  The rope always seemed like a huge deal to me.  I had my coach show me how to do the foot hold again because during my training class I could not even hold onto the rope.  Before I knew it I was up at the ceiling!

I did drop a lot of weight by changing my diet, but going to Crossfit took me to a different level.   Here is a pic of me before Crossfit (after my diet change) and now.  I took pictures because the scale does not tell the whole story.  You know the whole muscle weighs more than fat thing.

I am really looking forward to what I can accomplish in 2014!  Crossfit is my sport and it is something I am doing for myself.   It has given me tangible goals to achieve and I feel better than I have in years.
Now that I have opened the conversation I will post things about my workouts as well as stuff about the kids.  This will help me keep track of my progress.

Cute Art from school

Will wore this and sang Rudolf the Red nosed Reindeer in Spanish with his class on the school news program.

We have an Elf on the Shelf at our house.  The first year we had it Will did not believe.  I got the movie about the elf and that helped him understand.  I showed them both the movie in the car over Thanksgiving.  Of course the decided to name our elf Chippy like the one in the movie.  Our elf did not show up until a few days after we got home from Thanksgiving in Summerville.  I did not plan that out really well.  I only forgot to move him once so far, but then moved him before Will noticed.  Cate loves to hunt for "zippy" every morning.  She always goes to the place he was last then goes on the hunt.  Our elf does not do crazy things or make messes that I will have to clean up.  It is all I can do to remember to move him and find a new spot to put him.

Changing the way I eat

Whenever I saw someone around me lose weight I always wanted to know how they did it.  So that is why I am doing this post and future posts about the subject.  Maybe it will help someone else.  I did not do a crash diet or use pills.  I used self discipline and the scale kept me motivated.

Around Christmas last year I was not too happy with the way I looked in pictures.  I barely recognized myself in the pictures with Santa.  I obviously look in the mirror everyday, but I just did not see it.  The scale was slowly creeping up and I felt like there was nothing I could do.  Once I saw the pictures I knew I had to do something.

The summer of 2012 I did P90X 5 days a week and saw some change in my body.  When school started back I did it 3 days a week with a coworker after school.  No big changes.  So Christmas was here and the new year was around the corner.  I decided that I needed to change the way I ate.  You hear over and over that tummies are made in the kitchen not the gym.

I am horrible at counting calories and the idea of a diet plan was overwhelming.  Then I thought about the Paleo diet that I had heard about.  I started to research it online.  I bought the book the Primal Blueprint and it all clicked.  I realized that the foods I was eating were making me sick.  Like really sick.  To the point that I thought that I needed my gallbladder out.    Because apparently surgery was a better option to me than stopping eating a bunch of crappy food.
So lets just say my entire outlook on food has changed.  It is no wonder I could not drop weight.  I was eating foods that encouraged fat storage.  So that being said I got on Pinterest and made a board of recipes and food lists.  It was a secret board, but now it is not
The best part of Paleo is that there is a yes food list and a no food list.  I just eat the foods I like on the yes food lists.
I made the decision and I told Mark that this is what I was going to do and if he wanted me to cook he would have to eat what I made.  Well guess what, he was game.  I started Dec 26, 2012.  I was really anxious the first day because we went out to eat, but I knew what foods were on my yes list and I survived.  It was great.  I decided that I was going to eat as much as I wanted at first as long as it was a food on my yes list.

Well the weight just fell off.  I lost 6 lbs in the first month.  A lot of that was bloat, but not all of it.  People started to notice immediately.  I stayed very strict with my eating for 3 months and dropped 10 lbs total.  Then IEP season was in full swing and I was not as dedicated, but I did not gain any back.  The summer came and I stayed where I was and junky food started to creep in every now and then.
This shirt pretty much sums it up.  I eat clean as much as I can, but this is a change in my lifestyle.  I still eat crap food, but I really try to limit it.
Here I am in April.  Three and a half months later.
Oh and if you are wondering about Mark he dropped 15 lbs.  Of course!  He started running and lifting weights regularly.  He even started to cook more which was a nice side benefit.
